The last Sunday of each month, I do a news roundup of fun/weird/interesting news and other ephemera of note I find on the internet.
October had some interesting finds. I hope you enjoy them. If you’re looking for more, some runners-up included how one species achieves immortality by turning into a polyp, how drug use has been with humans for at least 25,000 years, and two articles (here and here) about 1,000+-year-old mummified dogs.

🤓 Pneumatic Tubes 🤓
I couldn’t find any interesting articles about pneumatic tubes this month, but I did stumble across this history and sneak peek of the Mayo Clinic’s pneumatic system. (If you’ve been a long-time subscriber, you know that all large hospitals have elaborate tube systems to transport drugs, blood, and other medical-type things. You can read my posts about it here and here.)

Tube Talk’s Weekly Game: WTF Is This Patent For?!
Know what it is or know a good wrong answer? Submit it below and I’ll share the winners next week.
Here’s the answer to last week’s image, which had a dude enclosed in what looked like a buried box with a chimney-like vent to the surface. In his hand, he held a rope connected to a bell.
It turns out that it is kinda what it looks like: an “improved burial case.” It was filed by Franz Vester in 1868, and, as he describes it in his patent application, “should a person be interred ere his life is extinct, he can, on recovery to consciousness, ascend from the grave and coffin by the ladder; or, if not able to ascend by said ladder, ring the bell, therby giving an alarm, and thus save himself from premature burial and death….”
We had a lot of great answers for it! Bryan, Biddy, and Tiffany “win” for guessing correctly. But I’d say the real winners are the following Tube Talkers: Kathy suggested it was a place for parents to hide from their children; Nick posited that it was a “submersible bobsled allowed riders to safely traverse the track underwater”; and Dave… said a lot of weird wonderful things, but it basically boiled down to the person inside eating rodents that fell into the trap above. Yum!
